Located in Sedgwick County, the city of Wichita (spread over 135 square miles) reported 344,284 people in the 2000 Census.
Known as "The Air Capital of the World", Wichita is one of the fastest growing population centers in Kansas.
Racially, the city is 75% White, 11% Black, 9% Hispanic or Latino, 4% Asian, and 1% Native American.
The median annual income is just under $40,000; however, almost 38,000 people (11% of the population) live below the poverty level ($18,850/year for a family of 4).
Wichita is home to several World Impact ministry programs:
Currently, there are three active World Impact church plants:
* Lighthouse Community Church in the Oaklawn neighborhood.
* Living Hope in the Southeast Village neighborhood.
* La Iglesia Cristiana Vida En Cristo Jesús.
At the corner of Central and Grove is the 2nd Blessing Thrift Shop.
Good Samaritan Health Ministries offers care for the medically under-served
with inexpensive health care and the Good News of Jesus Christ. The recent
arrival of a Mobile Medical Coach will allow us to take this service into
the neighborhoods that need it the most. We hope to be able to serve an
additional 8,000 people and use this ministry as a springboard for future
church planting.
The Urban Ministry Institute provides excellent, affordable, culturally-conducive, and relevant theological education for Christians in the city through on-campus and extension programs. The Urban Ministry Institute equips its students to cultivate the essential intellectual and academic skills necessary to enrich their knowledge of biblical theology, expand their personal vision and sharpen their ministry potential as church leaders in urban America.
