World Impact Schools are making a difference in the lives of inner-city children and their families. A letter we received from Melissa Flores, a former student who graduated from a top private university, testifies to the impact of our schools:

"I sincerely doubt that I would have ended up as confident and capable or where I am today had it not been for my teachers' and Bible Club leaders confidence and willingness to spend time with me and my family...I learned to cherish learning, to love God, to be proud of who I am and to never, ever let myself be less than what I am...I thank God every day for your intervention and commitment to inner-city youth."

World Impact Schools help equip students for a life of discipleship by helping them develop Christian Character, Academic Excellence and Self-Confidence.

Emphasizing the three C's

CHARACTER, COMPETENCE AND CONFIDENCE

For more than twenty years, World Impact Schools have been providing a quality, Christian education to the children of the urban poor in a safe and loving environment.

BUILDING CHRISTIAN CHARACTER
Through daily prayer and scripture memorization, Bible lessons, chapel worship and Christian service, our students develop their Christian faith and character. Our missionary teachers serve as living models of Christian commitment each day.

Middle school students at the Los Angeles Christian School participated in a thirty-hour famine. Famine to raise money for famine relief. Our students raised so much money that World Vision called our missionary teacher to find out how our students did it.

True Love WaitsThe Frederick Douglass Christian School launched Project Promise, a program that encourages middle school students to make commitments to godliness and holy living. At the end of the program the students received Rings of Promise as a commitment to sexual purity, marriage and educational excellence. The Los Angeles Christian Middle School continued the tradition of having their 7th grade students participate in the True Love Waits program. They make a public commitment to their parents and friends to maintain God's standard for sexual purity.

Elementary school students take a weekly offering to sponsor a needy student in Indonesia. Classes take turns writing encouraging letters to their student.

ACTIVE DISCIPLESHIP

Los Angeles missionary teachers, Selvin and Laurie Maaz, are discipling a group of 20 middle school students in evangelism and Christian service. Their Theater Company Club regularly uses evangelistic performances to help our church plant teams reach new neighborhoods. One of their students, Karen Jovel, learned so much about singing and worship that she was recently invited to become the youngest member of the worship team at her church.

One of our missionary teachers, has a peacemaking center in her classroom where students go to solve problems with each other. They are taught a process that leads to forgiveness and reconciliation.

Peace MakingEach morning the first grade students at the Los Angeles Christian School start with prayer and praise. Each student has a prayer journal where they write their prayers to God. They often ask for more time from the teacher to write their prayers.

First grade prayers:

"Please God, make the gang members leave my street so I can out and play."

"God please get my Dad to become a Christian."

"God, please help my sister come out of my mother's stomach and not be angry."

Our school custodian came to Christ after attending many school chapels and hearing the students recite their Bible verses each week. She explained that she wanted to know about the hope that she heard in those verses. Now she and her husband attend a Spanish speaking church World Impact planted.

PROMOTING ACADEMIC COMPETENCE

Back to top of page

Small classes, high standards, parental support and accountability, talented missionary teachers and volunteers all create an environment where inner-city students can achieve at high levels.

Our first grade students have scored in the top 20% of the nation in reading on the SAT test. One year, nine of our 8th grade students scored over the 80th percentile in mathematics.

GREAT START PROGRAM:

State of the art computer labBecause learning starts at home, the GREAT START program teaches parents how to help their children get ready to succeed in school. Mothers and fathers of three and four year old children meet twice a week for pre-reading and language skills.

One day, a child in the GREAT START program said to his father in English, "I love you, Father." The father asked him where he learned to say that. The child explained that he heard his Great Start teacher say it when she prays. The father had tears in his eyes when he told this story.

Volunteers help tutor our students.

Our schools provide state-of-the-art computer technology programs. Students are learning skills such as Internet research, web page design, multimedia presentations, spreadsheets and data base applications.

INSTILLING SELF-CONFIDENCE

The confidence of our students grows as they achieve academically at our schools and as they develop their faith and character.

Students from the Los Angeles Christian School spent a week at our World Impact camp studying outdoor education and team building. Daniel was shy and a bit overweight. He lacked confidence in physical education and rarely participated. On the last day of camp, his class had to face their biggest challenge-rock climbing. Daniel waited until last, clearly fearful. But he met the challenge and made it to the top. You could see his confidence in himself grow.

Inner-city students rarely have the opportunity to develop their artistic skills. Through our art programs, students discover their abilities and how art is used to glorify God.

Our students regularly perform school musicals and speak at events. Many supporters have commented about how confident and poised our students are.

Steve Larson, the missionary librarian at the Newark Christian School, has sponsored a chess club for years. Up to 25 students compete in their school chess tournaments.

LEGACY OF IMPACT

Back to top of page

After many years of providing Christian education, many of our former students have graduated from college and are serving Christ in their communities.

Robert Luna was in the first graduating class of the Los Angeles Christian Middle School. Since then he graduated from Detroit Mercy University with a degree in Engineering. He was the first in his family to earn a college degree, but not the last. His twin sisters, Yvonne and Vanessa Luna attend Cal State University Long Beach.

Priscilla Flores's life changed forever when she walked to our Bible Club over 16 years ago. In the midst of preparing for finals and graduation from the University of Southern California with a degree in communications, Priscilla took the time to send World Impact a Certificate of Appreciation and a letter testifying to the impact World Impact and the Los Angeles Christian School had on her life. She wrote, "The Los Angeles Christian School was more than a school to me, it was a haven. I learned to cherish learning, to love God, to be proud of who I am and to never, ever let myself be less than what I was."

Over 16 years ago, Gloria Escobar came upon a World Impact Bible Club in her neighborhood and enrolled her sons. Little did she know that this one act would change her life, and the life of her family for ever. After attending the Bible Club, she enrolled her sons in our Christian school in Los Angeles. Her older sons graduated from our school, finished high school and graduated from a top private university in Los Angeles. Gloria's youngest son, Jose, received an award for academic excellence in social studies when he graduated from our school. Gloria has attended a World Impact church plant for many years and credits World Impact and our Christian schools for changing the life of her entire family.

Missionary TeachersMISSIONARY TEACHERS

The heart of our mission schools are the missionary teachers. Our teachers are called by God to come and live in the inner city and to help support our church planting efforts by teaching in our mission schools.

Besides teaching the curriculum, they invest in the spiritual development of their students. They serve as a "living curriculum" of godliness and commitment to their students.

We are praying for those who will financially support and pray for our missionary teachers.

Sponsoring a student is a personal and meaningful way to impact a life of an inner-city child! Our sponsors regularly pray for their student and help supplement the tuition through monthly donations. Sponsors receive a picture of their students with a biography. Many of our sponsors have visited their students or have created a pen pal relationship. Our Student Sponsorship Program is what allows us to provide a high quality Christian education to our students for a tuition as low as $25 per month. You can sponsor a student at one of our schools by indicating "student sponsorship" in the comments field on the bottom of the contact form.
