The Frederick Douglass Christian School (FDCS) is a Christian-centered learning community designed to serve and empower inner-city families by providing quality education in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Through individual attention to the needs of each student, the school encourages the development of Christian character, academic competence and self-confidence. The school supports and works together with Christians in Chester to offer an alternative educational experience for future community leaders who will use their skills and talents to stimulate spiritual, social, and economic growth within the city of Chester.

FDCS has 70 students, K to 5th grade.

In addition to providing quality Christian education, the After School Program meets the needs of students and families each day. Parents can allow their children to complete their homework, go to computer classes, play games in the gym and exercise cooperative leadership in the Program. Parents thought it was just another after school care program until during our recent parent conferences when parents of fifth graders told us, "Most children don't want to go to school during regular hours, and my child doesn't want to come home at 6 o'clock, after a full day of classes."

Each year students present a Christmas musical, based on the Bible story about the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, and we also present a spring musical around the Easter resurrection morning. Students are learning that God gives them gifts and talents to be used for His glory and to communicate to others Who He is through the lives they lead.

SCHOOL STAFF NEEDS:

Please see our current staffing needs on the main Web page.

Volunteers are always needed to assist in the classrooms, computer room, after school program (3-6) and in providing instrumental music instruction.

PURPOSE OF OUR SCHOOL:

The Frederick Douglass Christian School supports the mission of World Impact in Chester by providing families with a quality education which integrates academics and a Christian view of God and His world. Because we believe that parents are responsible to God for the education and nurture of their children, the school supports parents who wish to provide a Christian alternative to the secular education system (Deuteronomy 6:5-8). Acknowledging the Bible, as interpreted by the Holy Spirit, to be the standard by which we measure all truth, the school offers a curriculum rooted in God's Word. This curriculum, taught by qualified Christian teachers, enables parents to provide their children with academic instruction consistent with the clear teachings of scripture (Ephesians 6:4).
Education, as offered by the Frederick Douglass Christian School, is a means used by God to bring students to Himself through personal faith in Christ and to equip them to grow in their faith so that they can fulfill God's will in their personal lives and in responsible service to their families and their community.

OBJECTIVES:

Spiritual -- To teach the Bible as authoritative and foundational for all life. Students are encouraged to embrace biblical truth and to live a new life in Christ under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Through a Christ-centered curriculum, students are taught to reflect God's purity and love to the world around them and to bring glory to God in all that they do.
Academic -- To teach with excellence all subjects from the viewpoint of God's revealed truth and to develop in the students a love for learning which fully develops their God-given abilities.
Social -- To recognize that learning best occurs in community and flows from relationships of trust which exist between staff, students and families. Students are helped to develop a healthy relationship with God which will result in respectful and loving concern for family members, teachers and others.
Emotional -- To develop in students a godly character, self-confidence, and academic competence. Students are taught to assess their strengths and weaknesses, and to adopt godly character traits and habits which will allow them to handle responsibilities and display a growing Christian maturity.
Physical -- To teach students that their bodies are the temples of God's Spirit and that they are responsible to treat them with respect. The school instructs students about practices harmful to their bodies or dangerous to others.
Cultural -- To appreciate the rich variety of God's creation as reflected in differing cultural heritages. Students are encouraged to learn about and to value their culture and also the culture of others. The educational program is structured to accommodate the unique gifts, abilities and learning styles present within the student body.

Our school is named after Frederick Douglass:

Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) was born a slave in Tuckahoe, Maryland. He became a Christian and taught himself to read the Bible. He became the abolitionist movement's most eloquent orator. He was internationally recognized, authored anti-slavery books and wrote for the anti-slavery weekly, The North Star. President Grant appointed him as American minister and consul general of Haiti.
