Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday Reflection: Jesus Washes His Disciples' Feet

As we enter this sacred evening of Maundy Thursday, we pause to remember the final hours Jesus spent with His disciples. He shared a meal, broke bread, and did something unexpected—He knelt and washed their feet.

What an incredible act of love and humility. Jesus, knowing the suffering ahead, chose to serve. He calls us to do the same—to love one another with a servant’s heart, to extend grace where it is undeserved, and to follow His example of humility. Tonight, as we reflect on this powerful moment, may we ask ourselves: How can I serve as Jesus served? How can I love as He loved?

Scripture

John 13: 12-20

When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” (ESV)

Reflect

In humility, servanthood, and love, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet just as he would wash away their sins through his death.

Pray

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your humility, Your servanthood, and Your unwavering love. Help me to follow Your example—to serve selflessly, to love unconditionally, and to reflect Your grace in all I do. Teach me to put others before myself, just as You have done for me. Amen.
