TUMI Student Jason Coleman

My name is Jason Coleman and I'm the husband of Ruth and father of Grace Rose. By God's design I'm also a music producer, writer, and drummer who over the last several years had an opportunity to record, perform, and tour with several Christian hip-hop artists. I had already been walking with the Lord most of my life, but during my travels with these artists I was introduced to the importance of the gospel, sound theology, and its prominence in relation to who God is, who we are as His image bearers, and what He's called us to do. I quickly gained an insatiable thirst for sound theology. Eventually, the Lord put an overwhelming sense of compassion in my heart for the people in my community to share with them my joy and hope of the everyday reality of the gospel. With this new passion I developed a desire to be equipped for this missional task that the Lord had given me. I prayed about it and the Lord responded through Rick Horne with The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI).

TUMI has been a tremendous blessing as I pursue the Lord’s call on me to become a pastor. I've been able to dive deeper into and consume the richness of the nature of the Father, the character and attributes of the Son, and the role and responsibility of the Holy Spirit as well as the church. The class discussions have been extremely insightful in teaching me to be aware of twisted views of Scripture. They have further reinforced my need to be thoroughly equipped to rightly divide the Word of truth. My understanding of the Kingdom of God has been significantly deepened and my heart has been motivated to begin advancing this reality that Christ has inaugurated. Also, due to Rick Horne gathering years of biblical counseling and study and creating a curriculum, I've already gained a huge head start in the area of pastoral counseling and have used some of its content in my efforts to help others (and of course myself).

I answered the call to labor with the churched and the unchurched in my community who, due to a lack of gospel-oriented and culturally-relevant engagement, have developed misconceptions about Christ, the Bible and the church. TUMI addresses all of this and through it and its faithful mentors, God is preparing me to faithfully work with Calvary Baptist Church in Carneys Point, NJ to bring God glory in our community.
