Each fall, Los Angeles Christian School holds some kind of event as a fundraiser. Past events include pancake breakfasts and a Fun Fitness Day – they have been fun and raised money for the school, but this year our planning team wanted to try something different. This year’s fall fundraiser was called Heritage Night and featured entertainment, food from all over the world, and fun booths with facts or decorations from various countries.
We wanted Heritage Night to be an evening of celebration of different cultures, so we asked each class in the school to choose a country or culture to represent. Most of the Central American countries are represented in our school population, but it was fun to see classes venture out and choose other countries like Greece, India, and China, in addition to countries like Mexico and Guatemala. Some classes had crafts at their booth, while others provided food samples, or prepared a performance. Our third grade teacher taught in Ghana last year, so she taught her students a dance from Ghana that they performed. It was an amazing evening!
Since this was the first year for this type of event, we did not know what to expect. We charged an admission fee and promised a plate of food samples (which would serve as dinner) along with an evening of entertainment. Our initial concern was that we would not have enough food to serve all the people we hoped would attend. Our school families are wonderful, though, and we need not have worried. We had more food than we knew what to do with and the variety was astounding. Another area that took a little while to fall into place was the entertainment, but by the day before the event we had a full line up of performers, including several beautiful dances and songs sung in various languages.
There were a few plans that fell through, but the best thing about this event was seeing the school pull together as a team to make it happen. It was not just “Miss Julie’s event,” but it truly was a school event with parents, teachers, students, and staff all working together. Seeing families have fun together is also a great reward of a successful evening!
