While in prison, Derek had a great idea for ministry. He decided to teach other inmates to read using Scripture, from the book of First John. Cathy Allsman, World Impact’s Incarceration Ministry Specialist, was so impacted by Derek’s story that she was moved to start praying for Derek’s release from prison. She did not know if Derek was eligible for upcoming release, but she prayed, “Lord, please put such a servant of God like Derek on the right path so he can serve you on the outside. There are so many pitfalls for returning citizens, so please help him along his way.”
Within a matter of days after praying for Derek, Cathy received a phone message. Derek reported that although he was homeless for two nights, his parole officer put him up in a hotel for a week. Then he made contact through some friends who knew of a men’s home in San Bernadino where Derek could stay.
Derek told Cathy that the pastor who runs the men's home sees his need for structured study of the Word and wants him to continue his studies with The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI). Another man staying in the same home also started TUMI in prison, but has yet to complete his studies. Because of these two faithful men, he pastor of the men’s home is starting conversation with TUMI site coordinators about launching a TUMI site at there. We are grateful for this opportunity, especially because there are currently no sites in that area. God is faithful to answer prayers in ways we do not foresee!
