Over the last two years, Abe and I have developed a friendship and recently I was able to meet his family and hear more of his story. He has been taking TUMI classes the past 3 years and the Lord is using him in a powerful way.
I really had no idea what teaching a couple of TUMI classes in a prison would lead to. We started with a room full of men who were nervous and overwhelmed. That was two years ago. Today this same group of men has been dispersed over three separate units of the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.
2015 has been filled with growth for The Urban Ministry Institute – more satellite locations, increased prison and jail sites, more graduates, and adding translations of the curriculum.
Beyond question, God has done much through TUMI this year – things which have helped us fulfill our World Impact focus areas and initiatives.
Reaching the urban poor with the transforming Gospel of Jesus means finding and equipping leaders who can speak powerfully into the urban context.
We recently sat down with Jean Congera, one of our students at The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI) of Dallas. As Jean prepares to graduate this January, we wanted to share with you his TUMI experience and ministry hopes for the future that you can join us praying for Jean and his family.
“The two most significant blessings in my life have been prison and the homeless shelter where we live now,” Chris told me as he related some of the Lord’s pilgrimage for him.
Becky Hoferer is a single mom with a young daughter who has disabilities. Raised in the foster system from ages 11-18, Becky considers herself blessed to have had believing foster parents. But when she aged out of the system, she also drifted away from the church.
I serve as the pastor of Southside City Church (SCC) of Fort Worth, Texas. The Holy Spirit led us to start SCC over eight years ago now with a specific mandate to not only be a church that ministers to the poor, but to be a church for the poor.
