October 1, 2016
Dear Friends,
We added a sixth week of summer camp this year! I was thrilled to have the opportunity to lead an Adventure track for 15 youth during this week. I could not have done it without the amazing help of Heather, Riley, Sage and The Oaks’ Adventure Team!
We swam a lot in the pool, did high ropes, zip line and rock climbing here at camp. We practiced hiking on difficult terrain, hopping across boulders and skidding down gravel chutes. We did a few short hikes in the local area–crossing a hot, dry and thirsty lakebed and learning to find drinkable water in the shady canyons above. The climax of the week was a rock climbing/ river swimming/ backpacking trip to the Kern River in the Southern Sierras.
Our 2016 summer camp theme was “OASIS.” This reflects The Oaks as a place of physical and spiritual refuge and nourishment. Many youth are searching for fulfillment in things that leave them empty and hurting. But Jesus said, “Those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life” (John 4:14). In this verse we see Jesus exemplify compassion and love through crossing the social and religious boundaries of His day in order to share His good news with the woman at the well. Please pray with us that our campers reach out to their communities with the overflowing, living water of Christ.
Drinking up,
The Currados
