This past fall Charles facilitated his first TUMI (The Urban Ministry Institute) class, taking on the role of co-mentor. This is a real accomplishment considering he enrolled in his first module less than two years ago. Charles, however, is a mature follower of Christ with much volunteer ministry experience; and our Capstone Curriculum is practical training material, designed for ease of use by former students and others.
Charles’s story is typical of many who use TUMI for training: they are gifted for ministry but denied significant opportunities to serve. After years of fulfilling minor roles in a local church, Charles established a successful outreach ministry among the poor. However, he lacked a seminary degree, so he was passed over by both his denomination and local congregation for recognition, support, or even encouragement. Charles attempted to earn credentials by enrolling in a local Bible institute but was disappointed with its lack of spiritual foundations and practical application.
After someone recommended TUMI to Charles, he came to my office to inquire about our program. Since then, he has enrolled in every course offered, attending regularly a couple times a week and even on the weekends. When asked to describe his experience here at TUMI-LA, Charles wrote, “TUMI has been a source of true spiritual inspiration. The classroom teachings, with honest discussions and testimonies of other students have helped me to become more singularly focused about the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. TUMI has fulfilled and continues to exceed what I needed.”
Charles will complete his course work this spring and is hoping to plant a new church soon after. His TUMI certificate (16 courses, 32 credit hours) will qualify him to pursue ordination as a World Impact Associate or through one of several denominations that now recognize our training.
