Students with The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI) come from a variety of backgrounds. Urban leaders are men, women, African American, white, latino, older, younger and everything in between. TUMI works to equip each leader with solid biblical training applicable to their urban context. Here are a couple of snapshots of TUMI students in Dallas.
Cynthia Avery is an active member of her church volunteering on the prayer team, women’s group and homeless outreach ministry. She is 63 years old and says of her calling, “I just want to be used by God, wherever He directs me. I want to be pliable.” She credits TUMI classes for deepening her love for Scripture saying, “TUMI has helped to develop skills that create an inherent desire and understanding for the Word of God…It is not an easy journey, there were times I wanted to quit but my class, my facilitator, prayer, and God’s grace has kept me focused.”
Brandy Dawson is another TUMI student who works in his church as the co-leader of the men’s ministry. He says, “I believe I have been called to minister to men with challenging backgrounds…The message of the Gospel contains hope and life in Christ Jesus. I believe God has chosen me to declare that message to men who are looking for something better and true.” He explains how TUMI is equipping him to be a stronger leader, “My TUMI class, I believe, is God’s way of shaping me and making me to become a strong and effective leader in the church and community.”
Many more leaders from different backgrounds across the country are using their TUMI training to become more effective leaders in their community. It is clear that the Kingdom of God is growing through TUMI and empowering urban leaders!
